13 Songs, 52 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Sharon Van Etten revisits her hushed, lo-fi 2009 debut, Because I Was in Love, revamping it with crystalline remastering and two extra tracks. The spare, languid beauty of the longing opener, "I Wish I Knew," sets the pace for this movingly minimalist production. She's expanded her sound greatly since then, but that only makes the songs' purity and simplicity all the more affecting. The ghostly gut-punch of "I'm Giving Up on You" and the aqueous, goosebump-inducing harmonies of "You Didn't Really Do That" provide ample bonus-track bounty.
