Bolstered by the massive success of “Round and Round,” Ratt retained the blueprint of Out of the Cellar for their sophomore album, but they made every element bigger and bolder. Invasion of Your Privacy spawned three hit singles in “Lay It Down,” “You’re In Love” and “What You Give Is What You Get,” all of which exemplify the stomping, cavernous groove of prime-period hair metal. Within that world, Ratt were one of the few bands that understood how to write hits without sacrificing hard-rock grit. Even the power ballad here —“Closer to My Heart”— is delivered with seething attitude. Though frontman Stephen Pearcy was Ratt’s focal point and spokesman, Invasion of Your Privacy really belongs to the band’s duel guitarists, Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby. Their high-velocity playing is highlighted in “You’re In Love,” “Give It All” and “What You Give Is What You Get,” songs in which the solos seem effortless, but nonetheless provide the music with sudden jolts of excitement.
