Insides Out

The son of legendary ‘70s southern California songwriter Warren Zevon, Jordan Zevon stakes out his own musical terrain while retaining his father’s attention to lyrical detail. “The Joke’s On Me” has more Cheap Trick, ‘70s New Wave and ornate pop instrumentation and harmony (that recalls Fountains of Wayne and Ben Folds Five) than dear old dad would ever favor, but then Jordan’s also a very different singer. He’s slippery and loose, able to shift to high harmonies, sometimes cruising under the radar and sinking deeper into the mix (“This Girl”) while at other points shooting for center stage, as on the tribute to his late mother and father (“Home”). However, Zevon isn’t one to dwell. “Studebaker,” an unreleased tune from the elder Zevon included on the 2004 tribute Enjoy Every Sandwich, features the playing of his Los Angeles session pros — David Lindley and Waddy Wachtel — bringing it to full effect. Elsewhere, this is a bouncy collection. “Just Do That” pumps the piano. “Camila Rhodes” pays tribute to a young childhood neighbor with a grand arrangement. Spirited pop throughout.
