In My Mind I Am Free (Bonus Track Edition)

Blue Foundation explores the porous borders between electronica, industrial, and dream pop on its fifth album, In My Mind I Am Free. Partners Tobias Wilner and Bo Rande bring a cool intelligence and keen eye for detail to the project, enlisting such guest vocalists as Mew’s Jonas Bjerre, British singer/songwriter Findlay Brown, Bichi/Ghost Society chanteuse Sara Savery, and Japanese artist Cokiyu. The group’s extensive soundtrack involvements are apparent in the cinematic sweep of pieces like the seductive “Lost,” the disorienting “Broken Life," and the ominous “Needles.” Wilner’s wistful vocals on tunes like “Just a Hand” and “Fundamental” flicker in and out of focus like scenes in an avant-garde film. While an otherworldly longing predominates here, a note of social commentary creeps into “Hard Life.” The stuttering krautrock beats of “Ground Control,” the string-draped shuffle groove of “Dressed in Black,” and the slowly unfolding textures of “Describe” help keep things sonically diverse. The music here invites you to create your own mind-movies to its shifting sounds and shadowy moods.
