The Pastels may not sound as good as this album...

Illuminati is a compilation of The Pastels covers by various artists such as Stereolab, Kid Loco and The Make Up (who are a whole other discussion!) I truthfully bought it because a somewhat trusted sales guy at Other Music recommended it back in the day (1998!)
To say I was pleased with this purchase is an understatement. There a surprises galore. Third Eye Foundation give a hip hop drum beat and simplistic keyboard a dreamy overlay with a vocal sample (I guess of the lead singer's strangely hypnotic, childlike voice. Smashing.
There are multiple versions of a few songs. I'd never heard the originals but it's great to hear cats come at the same thing three completely different ways.
Look, if I get three good songs on an album, I'm usually happy. If I go down the playlist, I got 10 outta sixteen. Damn good ROI (return on investment) if you ask me.
Look, I'm only just writing this because I updated my itunes and one of the songs popped up so I figured I'd do a little research on this forgotten album. I think the album worthy of the time taken to write this review. I also think it's worthy of you listening to it. Lovely stuff.

On a totally subjective "tip." This album sounds like what I'd play in a drafty old dorm room in a north east college. Yellow sodium lights casting strange shadows through bare branches as the girl who decided 'we were both cut from a different cloth and too sensitive for all this' shared her clove cigarettes as I occasionally brushed my fingers against her often hidden but always warm skin.

But that's just me.
