Drummer Jack DeJohnette dives deep into his history to launch this new collaborative band. The album’s title track has an air of patient, electrified fusion that recalls Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, on which DeJohnette appeared. The group keeps that sound as a reference point throughout, but also works small changes into its magic: “El Swing” has a casual, enjoyable lilt, and the cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Wait Until Tomorrow” adapts the force of classic rock into its swing.
