I Want That You Are Always Happy

Before splintering into a handful of other projects, The Middle East gave us this gorgeous 2011 album—their first and last. Just as Mumford & Sons were making folk huge again, this Townsville, Queensland ensemble dabbled in lush bluegrass (“Hunger Song”) and Flying Burrito Brothers-style country-rock (“Dan’s Silverleaf”), along with ruminative piano sketches (“Sydney to Newcastle”) and Neil Young-worthy fuzz (“Jesus Came to My Birthday Party”). Despite multiple singer/songwriters charting so many different directions, these songs coalesce into one of the brightest examples of modern Australian music.
