With Michael Tait now firmly established as front man, Newsboys apply their trademark pop/rock sound to a well-chosen set of classic hymns on Hallelujah For the Cross. The inventiveness and sunny spirit that have long characterized this veteran Christian outfit bring fresh luster to church standards like “All Creatures of Our God and King,” “His Eye is On the Sparrow” and “I Surrender All.” The band’s rocking, electronica-tinged version of “It is Well” and the vigorous do-wop treatment given “All Hall The Power Of Jesus Name” are especially arresting.
