Recorded inside Malawi's maximum-security Zomba Prison by producer Ian Brennan (who won a GRAMMY® for his work with Tinariwen), this collection of songs from singers age 20 to 60 addresses many of the issues and difficulties in the lives of these people. Despite the harsh realities, songs like “I See the Whole World Dying of AIDS,” “The Flood,” and “Please, Don’t Kill My Child” feature surprisingly bright melodies and delicate fingerpicking on electric guitar. There are also several vocal-only pieces that are as direct, intense, and real, with “Goodbye, All My Friends” particularly chilling.
