12 Songs, 44 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

The fourth Tune-Yards album bears more electronics and dance beats than its predecessors, but Merrill Garbus' combination of sociopolitical savvy, outside-the-box creativity, and giddily infectious enthusiasm remains. While the R&B inflections and late-night club vibe of "Heart Attack" may represent something of a stylistic shift, the electronic beats of "Private Life" are sprinkled with the kind of world-music influences and playground-chant cadences that have been part of Tune-Yards' tool kit for a while. And the minimalist, dub-like feel of the haunting "Home" comes off as organic as anything Garbus has done.

Merril Garbus Appreciation Club

From WHOKILL to Bird-Brains to Nikki Nack, I am once again floored by how beautiful Merril Garbus's voice, creative genius, and lyrics are. Tune-Yards have always been my absolute favorite artist and I can say this is one of the few musicians who I love all the albums of. Every song is so intricate, with incredibly eccentric and eclectic percussions and vocals, and absolutely gut-wrenching poetry in the lyrics. I am so amazed of how far this artist has come and all that they will release in the future, and I believe this album is a very wonderful, clean, fresh take on what makes Tune-Yards great. Songs like Honesty and ABC 123 and Heart Attack are just some of the most incredible ones that are listed on here, and I have to say, I don't think I could ever be dissapointed by a beat dropped by Merril. Excellent album- I'd been looking forward to it for a long time and it's only better than I could have imagined.
