13 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Elvis Perkins’ third album is the closest he’s come to getting all of himself on record. It was largely recorded at home with him handling all the instruments. It’s a somewhat lo-fi collection, recorded in part on four-track tape machines. Perkins’ voice can be easily heard, but is often accompanied by additional vocals that wander through the mix, along with found sounds and random noises that create the feeling that other music is bleeding through old recording tape. This otherworldly feel enhances songs like “On Rotation Moses,” “Gasolina,” and “All Today” and gives the entire album the sense that it’s a long-lost recording finally recovered.

Additional Voices

I do like this album, because I think Elvis is an amazing singer and songwriter, but find my ears thrown off at times. My main problem is that theres one girl thats on most of the record, and I just don’t think she’s a good fit with Elvis. There are times when she sounds nice, but she’s on most of the songs and their voices just don’t match up. No chemistry between them. There are places I wish I could just go in and take out her parts, and I know I’d like it more. I am going to see him on tour in May and I really hope it’s just him.

Backup singers

The backup singer needs another gig. Her voice is monotonous and predictable yet distracting. Maybe fine on someone else's album, but it sticks out sorely here. Some tunes on this album that are pretty fine, but can we take two without the chick?

Mystery meats!

This album is great. Weird, dark, funny, moving, and surprising. Buy it and listen to it over and over again.
