I Am Not a Bum... I'm a Jerk!

With 2012’s I Am Not a Bum…I’m a Jerk, multi-instrumentalist Jonny Manak reveals himself to be as much of a movie fan as he is a music fan. Four years earlier, Manak released 1.21 Jiggawatts, which mused on Back to the Future. Here, Manak (mostly) waxes on the 1979 Steve Martin comedy The Jerk. Fans of Manak who've heard a previous version of this album will notice some differences here, starting with the super-charged punk ‘n’ roll party anthem “Tonight!” Manak remastered these songs to two-inch tape, giving them an immediately bigger fidelity. He also removed all the rootsy organ parts. “Navin R. Johnson” rocks out with vintage East Coast flair, sounding a little like The Dictators—save for lyrics based on Martin’s dimwitted protagonist. “Link” deviates from the comedic theme to pay homage to the rumbling tones of surf-guitar guru Link Wray. Manak blends the best of both worlds in “Special Purpose” by paying tribute to The Nashville Teens’ “Tobacco Road” as well as Navin R. Johnson’s code-named libido.
