At this point a veteran of the smooth jazz circuit, saxophonist Boney James still favors a warmer, earthier horn sound than is common in the genre. Aside from the opening soprano sax vehicle “Kicks,” he stays mainly on tenor. His rendition of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Skylark” is stark and unusual, a worthy perspective on more traditional jazz fare. Guest vocals by Avery*Sunshine and Eric Roberson, and tasty guitar licks on “Low and Slow” and “We Came to Party,” give a boost as well.
