13 Songs, 44 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

After a BRIT Critics’ Choice Award and a handful of well-received singles, Tom Odell released his first full-length record, Long Way Down—a dazzling showcase of the young singer/songwriter’s musical talent that debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. album chart. With a mix of stirring vocals and impassioned piano playing, the 22-year-old Odell digs deeply into his tortuous relationships, conveying both early euphoria (“Grow Old With Me”) and inevitable heartbreak (“Supposed To Be”) with disarming honesty. As mesmerizing as he is on haunted tracks like “Another Love”—his regret boiling to a furious crescendo he can barely contain—songs like “Till I Lost” show he can also belt out a sweeping chorus with a flair worthy of Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Yet even at its most quiet and introspective, Odell’s voice is one you can’t turn away from.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

Tom Odell is a certifiable genius!

I can't remember the last time I have heard a singer/songwriter who was as fresh, different, profound, and enjoyable to listen to as Tom Odell. Although he is still a young performer at the beginning of his career, he already has the skill and polish of a seasoned musical legend. He reminds me of the early Elton John in his "Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player" days.

While his music borrows from a wide range of influences, the end result is completely different from the rest of the generic pop garbage that most radio stations spew out these days. His lyrics are often romantic and thoughtful. Tom Odell is one guy who truly deserves to be a huge star. I hope that people in the US catch on, like they have in the UK and Europe, and he gets the attention and acclaim he deserves.

I recommend buying anything he ever does.
