Future legend at work

This is Sawyer’s first album that he has entirely written and produced himself. Having heard the bones of most of the pieces at concerts throughout the last year, they’re even more heart wrenchingly beautiful with the flesh of a full band wrapped around them. The album is cohesive without seeming repetitive, raw without seeming intentionally so. There is no pretense here- only the kind of independent free range folk that Sawyer has been master of since his busking days. This artist and this album are destined for legendary status.

Some Like It Dark

“This life is full of monsters,” begins Sawyer’s self-written and produced album. Themes flow from the abuse of the innocent by the powerful, to coldheartedness, to regret. A song about betrayal by parents (Broken Home) moves to betrayal by a lover (Half A Mind). The second half of the album enters the world of the mind and sense of self, climaxing in a long sleep paralysis nightmare (Angel’s Skin). But from the darkness we wake to the light of “I was lost, and I think I’m home” (How Beautiful). It’s remarkable that these songs were written between the ages of 14 to 17. Just as remarkable is Sawyer’s album concept, and spare but effective production using his unique voice, acoustic & electric guitar, drums and bass, plus some piano and back-up vocals. If you’re not afraid of the darker corners of life and mind, you should give Sawyer Fredericks’ entire album a listen.
