The Doctor Is In!

I remember listening to these guys in High School. My friend and I sang along to her copy of the record that had "Cover On The Rolling Stone". These guys were absolutely hilarious! If they required anything more from their listeners, they wanted us to see how they were not only very talented musicians, but they were enjoying themselves and didn't take themselves too seriously. Their last heard hits in 1980 were formulaic and out of sync with the rest of their style with "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman" and "Sexy Eyes". I can only guess with those last two songs the economy exceeded their ability to meet their means, because their humor was gone.

Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show

It's not their very best album--that honor brlongs to Sloppy Seconds--but it doesn't miss by much. Incredible songs by Shel Silverstein, heartfelt vocals by Ray and Dennis, and perfect instrumental backing that complements while never intruding makes for an LP that most groups would give their eyeteeth to have created.

Dr. Hook is one of the lesser lights in the rock heirarchy only because their music requires something extra from the listener. Yet it rewards handsomely with subtlety, emotion and often big belly laughs. If the only thing you know about these sterling gentlemen is "Cover Of The Rolling Stone," come and listen to where they originated their delightfully off-center style of music.
