Henge Beat

Henge Beat

Australian post-punk quintet Total Control blends the blunt attack of punk with the sci-fi distance of ‘80s synth-pop. A bleak, frenetic album that channels the romance of Suicide and the jerky, post-human appeal of Devo, Henge Beat plays like a transmission from an alien planet—probably uninhabitable but seductive nevertheless. Even when the band goes full throttle (“Retiree,” “Stonehenge”), they retain an alien air, owing in part to frontman Dan Stewart, who doesn’t sound like a singer so much as a troubled patient under deep hypnosis.
