Pearl Bailey was a treasure

I love this show . I do feel that the best was Carol but Pearl was something wonderful. My life partner saw this one . Said she made it hers . I do agree. There are moment in this cast where it is pure Pearl . If you colect show albums . This one with the Carol Channing one is great to have .Also one of the first shows done with a black cast .

finally ... the definative dolly!

the origiinal carol channing cast album is great! ... and always will be! ... once they realized what a massive hit they had with this show ... they had a few years to reorchestrate and embellish the playful score ...they spiked up the overture with extra zip and power ... all the songs are fresher and very lively ... and with the smooth voice casting of pearl bailey ... countered with cab callaway ... it just doesn't get any better than this reworking of jerry herman's showstopper ... enjoy it, it's a gem ... from start to finish!

Pearlie Mae steals the show

The great (and often hated) producer David Merrick astonished the Broadway community in 1967 when he announced that he was going to completely remount Hello Dolly! with an all Black cast. Was he going to turn the hit musical into a 1920's minstral show... at the height of the battle for racial equality and equal rights??? NO!!! Merrick simply gave some of America's most talented and beloved actors, actresses singers and dancerss a chance to shine in a gigantic show that audiences instantaneously fell in love with! I saw Dolly with Carol Channing... adorable. And later with Ethel Merman (tough as nails... but also adorable). But Pearl Bailey found a way to make the role her own... and without a doubt, she matched Channing for comedy and beat her (bigtime) as a singer. This is a terrific album.
