On Drowning Pool’s second album to feature feral howler Jasen Moreno, the veterans up the ante with a dark, menacing crunch that blurs the line between alt-metal and extreme metal. On “Drop” and “All Saints Day” their trademark guitar riffs are wedded to rhythms that, in their blistering intensity, border on hardcore punk. Even on the fairly melodic “By the Blood,” the group threatens to rip through the very fabric of the tune with Pantera-like rage. Musicians tend to mellow with age—not Drowning Pool.
