Hearts Don't Break - EP

The title of this debut EP from Blake Proehl is a misdirection. Hearts do break across this six-pack of tunes, and one of them is his. A former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver, Proehl got interested in music while rehabbing a knee injury in 2021. He found a fanbase posting home-recorded performance videos online before landing on American Idol in 2024, where he cracked the top 24. He signed to MCA Nashville in mid-2026, with this EP as his first official project. These six songs position Proehl as a student of crossover country artists like Sam Hunt and Walker Hayes, though there’s a sunniness to his music that also points to Top 40 mainstays like Justin Bieber, whom Proehl counts as a major influence. The title track is the clearest expression of that influence, as he turns in a loose and breezy pop anthem that sounds like a Jason Mraz outtake. Other highlights on the EP are “Way Back,” which recalls Hayes’s smash “Fancy Like,” and “Always Almost,” a vulnerable account of heartbreak and the project’s lone ballad.
