Healers Chapel

Healers Chapel

Wizard Chan’s 2024 EP The Messenger heralded the arrival of an artist who both thought and performed music quite a bit differently from those making an overt play for the music charts. If the uniquely spiritual and heavily roots reggae-influenced Port Harcourt native was going to make it onto a playlist, he’d have to have first entered your heart. But as his first proper album Healer’s Chapel confirms, it’s not because he has designs on stardom and riches untold. It’s because he’s got a song in his heart and he believes the world will be better for having heard it. It’s not hyperbole to say Chan makes music to heal. Songs like “I Want to Live Forever” (through music, of course), “By the River,” and “Amen (God My Dealer)” are effectively prayers in melody. “Oh My Home,” “Flee Oh Sickness,” and “Promised Land” are grounded in the goodwill Chan has for his fellow man. Which is not to say the singer sees himself as without fault. “In My Defence,” “Yours Truly,” and “Sober” are ruminations on the journey, Chan acknowledging that just like the rest of us, he’s got many more miles to go. Let us hope then that those roads are as revelatory of songs he needs to sing as the ones that brought him here.
