Haywire (Deluxe Edition)

Haywire (Deluxe Edition)

With its mentions of our crazy world and of course Josh Turner’s low rumbling bass voice, “Why Don’t We Just Dance” is sure to please anyone who smiled after first hearing Billy Currington’s “People Are Crazy.” Not to mention that Turner’s first hit off his fourth album Haywire is a line-dance hit recalling the ‘90s New Traditional craze. After all the comparisons to guttural countrypolitan crooner Don Williams, Turner takes on a gorgeous cover of “I Wouldn’t Be a Man,” which Williams had a hit with in 1987. The chorus here finds Turner singing outside his comfort zone by stepping up on some high notes before returning to his low tonal style. For the uplifting midtempo country rocker “As Fast As I Could,” he reunites with Jeremy Spillman who co-wrote Turner’s top 10 hit “Another Try” from 2007’s Everything Is Fine. This time around they tone down the sentiment and amp up the twang with a grip of traditional instruments. With Haywire, Fans of Turner won’t be surprised, but they won’t be let down either. While he doesn’t deviate from his past formula, the quality of these tunes is better, song for song.
