10 Songs, 43 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

After exhilarating dips into guitar rock and country, Carlile returns to her sweet spot: tear-jerking Americana that shows off her crackling croon. It’s her sixth album and her most moving, with vulnerable outsider anthems rooted in healing and hope. There are ballads about addiction (“Sugartooth”), suicide (“Fulton County Jane Doe”), heartbreak (“Every Time I Hear That Song”), and starting over (“Harder to Forgive”), but underneath the hard truths is plenty of optimism. In “The Joke,” a song for kids who don’t fit traditional roles, she offers a light at the end of the tunnel: “I’ve been to the movies/I’ve seen how it ends/And the joke’s on them.”

Great

I'm a simple person, if Jackson the Space Dog says it's good, I buy it.

"The Joke" is worth the price of admission.

What can be said? I've been a fan of Brandi's since that day in 2007 when I was strolling at Barnes and Noble in Nashville and faintly heard the most amazing sounding voice I'd heard in fifteen years coming from the speakers in the ceiling. Other shoppers probably thought it was odd to see a 25 year old man looking up at the ceiling with his mouth hanging open. The song was "Follow" and I immediately bought Brandi's debut album and as well as the follow-up, "The Story". I've since seen her live, twice, and purchased every single subsequent track and album on the day of their release. THAT'S HOW GOOD SHE IS. Now, let me provide a few words about this upcoming record. If "The Joke" is any indication, this album will sit right up her with her best. I liken her vocals to the most comfortable, yet stylish, chair you've ever sat in. (One made of worn leather, raw silk and velveteen and one you don't want to get up from...)

Thank you, Brandi. For continuing to push your songwriting, production and voice to their absolute most gorgeous and devastating limits.

I saw a review by Jackson Reviews on Youtube. If he says it's good, than it is.
