EDITORS’ NOTES

With their late-’00s full-length debut, Pennsylvania hard rockers Halestorm introduced themselves with tunes combining epically heavy instrumentation with catchy melodies. The crossover magic is most evident on “Better Sorry Than Safe,” which starts all post-grunge gloomy and swerves into classic metal ballad territory as charismatic singer Lzzy Hale belts out its fiery chorus. “Bet U Wish U Had Me Back” is another bruising, pop-imbued tune, but they go straight for the jugular with “Dirty Work,” which chugs ominously to its head-pounding chorus.

A fine rock album from start to finish with a Heart edge style I have been missing for a long time. The first time I heard this band I was blown away with their sounds and is truly a great buy.

I sure wanted to like this album but ...

... the lyrics are extremely redundant, and while I know this will draw some ire from fans, they're just kinda crybaby. I hate to say that, too, but after hearing a tune or two, I bought the whole album and realized that the sound is fine. The lyrics are painfully repetitive. Yeah, we get it, a man done you wrong, and he'll suffer for the loss. Only one tune stays away from the classic whiny moonmaiden "you done me wrong, you evil man" theme, and none of them are listenable a second time. As a footnote, the drummer lacks any style or flash at all, merely pounding away the same old drums until the whining ends.
Great sound. Crap lyrics. Weak rhythm section.

Fantastic!

Right from the beginning this cd starts rocking and never stops. Every song is awesome. Buy the whole cd and if you don't like it after one listen, then listen again. No favorites....they're all too good.
