With their late-’00s full-length debut, Pennsylvania hard rockers Halestorm introduced themselves with tunes combining epically heavy instrumentation with catchy melodies. The crossover magic is most evident on “Better Sorry Than Safe,” which starts all post-grunge gloomy and swerves into classic metal ballad territory as charismatic singer Lzzy Hale belts out its fiery chorus. “Bet U Wish U Had Me Back” is another bruising, pop-imbued tune, but they go straight for the jugular with “Dirty Work,” which chugs ominously to its head-pounding chorus.
