The only thing grunge or gospel about the Toronto singer’s album is his inspirational drive and self-belief. Over a dark alt-R&B backing, Joël casually recites bars with a disarming honesty. He shuts out the outside noise (“PCH,” “Everything’s Cool”) and waits for his shot (“Patience,” “Type”). Joël’s cool consistency, whether ending relationships (“Vent”) or making new ones (“Tonight”), shows that the blood in his veins remains icy.
