Right Record, Right Time

Brannan has paid his dues tenfold. The downs and the ups. The self-deprication and the heart-felt mess. And this record, which we have been hoping for, finally brings it all together in album form. This is his Not a Pretty Girl (Ani Difranco), his Bachelor #2 (Aimee Mann), his Tidal (Fiona Apple). That Jay is compared to a woman here is not condescending - it's apparent that he listens to chick studiously, and with great reverence. He's the best thing that's happened to chick music in a long time.

Romantic in a sick way ("Beautifully"), sick in a romantic way ("A Love Song"), punk rock ("The State of Music") and perversely funny ("La La La", "Greatest Hits").

I think the best compliment that I can give this album is that it reminds me of my favorite book writers as much as it does my favorite musicians. This album has the desperate honesty of writers that I root for, who I know are doing great things in studio apartments, who write all night while we all wish that we were during the day. He's committed in a way that might be insane, but I can't help but listen while he works his way towards the looney bin.
