14 Songs, 55 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Continuing their evolution from melodic European death metal toward modernized, palm-muted metalcore, veteran German fivesome Caliban crank out riffs and breakdowns that threaten to cause whiplash. But they do it with real symphonic finesse, calming into an eerie ambience in “brOKen” and supplementing their bass-and-snare-forward groove with tuneful piano in “Who I Am.” The singing has gained clarity too, but that’s not to suggest the band have abandoned their bloodthirsty side—“The Ocean’s Heart” and “Mein schwarzes Herz” sting with a brutality that’s truly ominous.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

Good, but

This album is good, but I really miss the melodic guitar riffs. They've become more technically bombastic with the clean vocals and guitar riffs, and the guitar riffs are kind of bland. Nothing is really grabbing me on this one. There is an industrial, over produced element to the music that I can't get into to. It's to the point that I don't want to listen to it constantly like I did to past albums, especially their middle catalogue such as "Undying Darkness," "Opposite from Within," and "The Awakening." Those were really memorable albums, with great riffs that stuck in my head forever. For example "I rape myself" was really catchy and brutal at the same time, with great, melodic guitar riffs, as well as a memorable chorus. Songs like that are missing here. That's not to say that it doesn't have its merits, because it does. Which is why I gave it 4 stars. Good album, not great. Hoping it grows on me as I listen more. Still a great band with a ton of talent.

Heavily awesome!

Got to listen to this on a powerful system to really appreciate it. WOW! I can't believe I missed this release. So I ran down and bought it and have played it 4 times so far in my truck with a system. Blown away!
