Greek lute player George Xylouris and Australian drummer Jim White come from different musical worlds, but on Goats, they sound like a natural fit. Xylouris is steeped in the traditional music of his native Crete, while White, a member of The Dirty Three, has played with PJ Harvey and Will Oldham. The tracks on the duo’s debut are rooted in Cretan forms, but they aren't restricted by them. On “Old School Sousta,” White’s drums rumble and Xylouris’ lines hypnotize as they spiral into the air. But the pair can be quiet too; check out the lovely closer, “Run and La.”
