Lauren Alaina proved herself to be a warm, impressively vivid singer as a contender on American Idol in 2011, but it wasn’t until the last half-decade that she got to lean on glossy, emotionally sharp country-pop material that she had a hand in writing. Getting Over Him is her second loosely autobiographical EP of 2020, following on the heels of March’s Getting Good. During “If I Was a Beer,” she bends country drinking tropes into clever disdain for an ex, embellishing the country-blues melody with lilting, salty but sultry control. She sounds brazenly cool-headed about indulging in footloose, temporary fun to get over a cheater during “Getting Over Him,” her rollicking duet with Jon Pardi, who enlisted her singing to sweeten a ballad of his own in 2019. Pop singer Lukas Graham serves as Alaina’s slicker foil on the swelling ballad “What Do You Think Of?”, the two of them grieving the hollow space left by a breakup with athletic intensity.
