In 1964’s seminal concert film The T.A.M.I. Show, Mick Jagger had the unenviable task of following a particularly electrifying James Brown performance. Fifty years later, rock icon–turned–film producer Jagger memorialized the Godfather of Soul with a loving, energetic biopic. It's fueled by this hits-heavy slate of Brown’s own groundbreaking R&B and funk performances; half are live, remixed with contemporary punch. Jagger notes the Godfather’s 1962 landmark Live at the Apollo performance “was a very big part of my early musical education,” and it's represented here by Brown’s manic early crowd-pleaser “Night Train.” The collection also focuses gratifyingly on the legend’s trailblazing evolution into sometimes politically charged funk in the early ‘70s; Brown's beats, riffs, and sensibilities continue to inform hip-hop and modern R&B. Also notable are two previously unreleased, typically turbo-charged live performances of the Brown staples “Please Please Please” and “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” recorded in Tampa, Fla., on April 23, 1966.
