Keith Urban is a country singer for the 21st century, meaning he would most likely be considered a rocker in the previous decade. “Put You In a Song” kicks off with a distorted guitar, a driving beat and enough vocal punch to make this closer to a country version of the Smithereens or even Green Day than the pure strains of Hank Williams or George Jones. These are intense pop songs with a twang. “You Gonna Fly” has a greater funk to it than most indie rock. “Long Hot Summer” could give the Counting Crows a good run for their heartland pedigree. “Shut Out the Lights” balances between a sensuous ballad and a full-out mid-western anthem. Not bad for a guy who grew up Down Under. The ballads are all convincing and expertly sung, and much closer to traditional country music. “All for You” has warm guitars underlining the flawless harmonies that get straight to the heart of the matter. “Without You” features a lead vocal where you can hear the intensity with each note. “Right On Back to You” is another cool, pull-the-car-over ballad. No matter what the actual genre, Urban sings it like he means it.
