EDITORS’ NOTES

A number of Israeli jazz musicians have come into their own in the early 21st century. Bassist Omer Avital, pianist Anat Fort, clarinetist Anat Cohen, and numerous others have made a big splash in New York, Israel, and elsewhere. Anat’s brother, the bassist Avishai Cohen, has played with Danilo Perez, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, and others, and has released a number of his own albums since the late 1990s. Cohen has a warm tone on his instrument, and can say a lot with a handful of notes. On Gently Disturbed he’s joined by the young Israeli pianist Shai Maestro and his longtime rhythm cohort, the American drummer Mark Guiliana, and the trio’s distinctive approach draws from a number of sources. Two traditionals, “Lo Baiom Velo Balyla” and “Puncha Puncha,” are just a couple of the tracks that display the influence of classical music, while “Eleven Wives” possesses the grandeur of a pop anthem by Radiohead or Coldplay. (It’s easy to imagine Maestro playing keyboards in a rock group.) The off-kilter chug of “Pinzin Kinzin” points to an abstracted but far from bloodless take on funk. The album’s highlight might be the title track, where a mysterious piano melody is intriguingly shadowed by Cohen’s bass.

The complex purity of simplicity

Why do I love the Avishai Cohen Trio? Let me count the ways. I love them for the simple sounds from complex chords and varied notes. I love them for the stop and go, stop and go rhythmic patterns that naturally evolve and flow. I love them for the purity of their jazz. I have most of Cohen's work, if not all, and Gently Disturbed ranks right up there with the rest.

Beatiful

Avishai is my favorite jazz artist of the 21st century. He's just so original. I hoped that he would bring another terrific album, and man he just blew me away. He, Mark Giulliana (Drummer) and Shay Maestro (Pianist) create the most beatiful jazz I heard in a long time. Mark Giulliana is probably the greatest drummer of the 21st century, he can drive you to tears. Shay is amazing pianist and he can really set the mood. And Avishai of course with his amazing upright basslines. The group manages to make jazz consisting of incredibly irregular beats, and extremely complex melodies. If you don't buy this album, you're missing out on an amazing jazz experience.

Careful... can be monotonous

I sampled most of the 30 second clips prior to purchasing, but did not anticipate some of the LOOONG riffs and sequences with virtually no variation. For instance, Variations on G Minor - don't count on it. Could be the my jazz ear just likes a little more variety. I'm going to keep trying, but I find that I just want to hit Skip on too many tracks.
