11 Songs, 48 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Early on, this acoustic jazz trio earned attention by interpreting Nirvana and Pink Floyd, and they return to the contemporary-pop fold with this set of covers. They twist tunes into new shapes; it’s only in the final minute of their version of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps” that Ethan Iverson’s piano comes close to pounding out Karen O’s most indelible refrain. The new interpretations can offer humor too, like when the uneven gait of “I Walk the Line” suggests a slightly inebriated honky-tonker.

Self back patter

Deal me in as a prentious self back patter who absolutely loves how this trio of accomplished musicians push the boundaries of melody, harmony, rhythm, syncopation and improvation to such great affect. Yes they are anarchists that happily deconstruct, reconstruct, bend and twist musical conventions for their intended purpose. More often that not they hit the target and provide a truly gratifying listening experience for those willing and able to take the ride.

This is fun in context!

This album is really fun when you listen to it in the context it was intended. As a group who is best known for taking pop & rock songs and performing a really great jazz version, it is really fun to listen to then try and see how far they can take a recognizable melody until you are no longer sure you recognize it. To rate this album without that understanding is perhaps even more pretentious than insulting the people that actually enjoy it in the way it was intended. It isn't pretty because that wasn't the point but it is enjoyable to try and keep up with them!

Excellent

Great album! Every tune is fantastic. If you haven't watched Dave's Rational Funk drum instructional series on YouTube, do yourself a favor and watch all 60. Binge watch them, if you like.
