Future Lovers

Vivid extremes collide on the debut album from Melbourne-based metalcore four-piece Banks Arcade. That’s true not just of the music, which grafts neon-hued electro flourishes to inky thrashings of metalcore, but also of vocalist Joshua O’Donnell’s lyrics. “Step into the dark/Don’t be afraid,” he sings on the opening title track, before carrying that refrain over into the rap-like vocal swagger of “Freaks.” Such contrasts thrive across Future Lovers: O’Donnell rips into full-throated screams on the industrial “Fake Your Death,” only to drop right back to softness. Taking inspiration from Northlane and The Prodigy alike, the album balances intensity with dynamic shifts. Among the strongest examples of that is the single “Don’t Start,” which slips from a groggy synth pulse into an explosive, bass-driven release—and back again—in well under three minutes.
