The previous INXS album, Welcome to Wherever You Are, had been a critical smash, giving the band some of the best reviews of their career. However, a lack of promotion from both the label and the band (they didn’t tour behind it) led to a lower profile than INXS had grown accustomed to. Full Moon, Dirty Hearts was the immediate follow-up. Again, the group worked with producer Mark Opitz, who helped the band adjust their sound for the harder, grungier ‘90s. The band’s rhythmic approach was still part of their appeal, but the arena-ready bombastic arrangements were toned down to reflect more focused atmospherics. Michael Hutchence had always been a classic rock lead singer at heart, and his moves throughout Full Moon, Dirty Hearts yield his idea of satisfaction. Ray Charles guests on the single “Please,” and Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders features on the title track.
