Much of this seven-track EP was written during a period of rehabilitation. The Auckland alt-pop artist was pursuing his musical career when, in 2015, he suffered a nervous breakdown, received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and took a break to care for his mental health. Fruit marks his gorgeous return. He gets personal on “Problem,” admitting, “I’m a problem…you know you’re better off alone,” while sedative drugs are a metaphor for love on opener “Fix Me Up.” And in an EP highlight, Young reinterprets Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” as dark, pained synth-pop.
