EDITORS’ NOTES

If you’d previously suspected that Neko Case occupied a niche of one, her fourth studio album made it official. Labels like “alt-country” and “indie-rock” disintegrate when faced with Fox Confessor’s haunting, haunted, half-traditionalist/half-otherworldly vision of Americana. This is where Case definitively establishes herself as a complete original, with admiring friends like Garth Hudson, Howe Gelb, Calexico, and The Sadies lending a hand. Don’t let that voice distract you from the literary depth of the lyric sheet either.

Repackaged version of masterpiece

Note that this album is a repackaged version of Neko's 2006 release. Anti re-packaged the album with some bonus tracks (only one of which appears here, listed as "Behind the House" which was a 2002, but the 30-second preview is actually the lead track from the Furnace Room Lullaby album) when they re-issued Furnace Room Lullaby and Blacklisted.

The album cover that Gormar complains about in his review was part of Anti's re-packaging effort. The original cover is a painting seen on another version available at iTunes. As for his complaint that the title is pretentious, Neko took the title from Ukrainian folk lore, which inspired some of the songs on this album (including the title track). In other words, you may think it's pretentious if you don't understand it, but that doesn't make it so.

I cannot heap enough praise on this album. Buy it and enjoy.

Neko is FANTASTIC but is this a rerelease?

I love the album, my wife loves the album, my five year old daughter LOVES the album but we've been listening to the album for a year. On iTunes there appears to be at list three different listing for the same album with different release dates. What gives? Anyways if you haven't bought this already all 13 tracks are awesome.

it doesn't get any better

This album takes you places. These songs will haunt you, in a good way. The melodies offer heartbreaking little twists and when the music is combined with her story-telling, she gets to the deepest part of you.

Her back-up musicians add such great color to the songs as well, just enough to perfect the song, nothing more.
