Brilliant and Beautiful

I just discovered this band a few days ago when I came across Not For Me as a Spotify suggestion. I am really just going to review this one song for now. I have played this a hundred times in the past few days - while driving in my car, while I am working, and this morning while walking on the beach. I just can’t get enough of it. There are just so many layers of melody and harmony, it’s like unpacking a chest of endless treasure. Ava’s vocals are beautiful and emotional. Her voice s instantly intoxicating, and she sings with real passion and power. She has to because this a monster guitar band. Guitars like I have never heard before. The chord progressions are fantastic - in the way that Brian Wilson’s and Burt Bacharach’s were fantastic. Yet there is this pesky lead guitar that keeps everything off kilter. I mean this as the highest compliment. He plays a gorgeous counter melody to the main vocal melody in the same way that Bach would use counter melody in his best compositions. At times these melodies come together and drift apart creating a sort of chaotic euphoria.
All of this is backed by a powerful rhythm and deep driving bass line. The bass is so deep it was rattling my speakers, and that’s a good thing.

I am still making out the lyrics on the verses but the chorus is as catchy as anything I have ever heard: “I left before you saw me” is one of the great song hooks of all time. It’s been dancing in my head for days. Later she sings “I should have known” almost as a second chorus. It’s transcendent.
There’s another great line Ava sings:
“I can’t feel the earth beneath my feet. Flowers bloom but not for me”
Beneath all of this musical beauty there is real poetry and a compelling story that she is telling. This is a truly great song, and these artists are truly making unique music and brilliant records.

I am so happy I discovered them.
