Flygod Is an Awesome God

Flygod Is an Awesome God

“Jul 27th,” which serves as the intro to Westside Gunn’s Flygod Is an Awesome God, is just over two minutes of verbal jewels delivered by none other than Raekwon the Chef. Throughout it, Rae speaks about the value of Gunn’s crew protecting their hearts and staying wary of relationships before finally advising them to “read books” and “understand life.” A cosign of this magnitude is nearly immeasurable for someone like the Buffalo-raised Gunn, whose streetwise fly-guy persona was born of Rae and company’s infamous Gambino rap mold. Gunn honors his golden-era forefathers over production from Alchemist, Daringer, Evidence, and Madlib (among others). Per usual, the MC’s bars unfurl effortlessly, as if he’s explaining how to conquer the drug game to an understudy as they share a walk to a local deli. Along for the ride this go are his Griselda Records brethren BENNY THE BUTCHER and actual brother Conway the Machine, along with extended family Meyhem Lauren and Hologram, who preserve the Flygod mission to sow their own legends in the street, noting how good they look while doing so.
