Authentic Inauthenticity!

One of the (few) virtues of aging is that I'm old enough to have seen the original production of Flower Drum Song on Broadway. Listening to this album is a trip back to that time and experience. There's hardly anything in it that's authentically Asian (Larry Blyden as a Chinese guy?!?; Pat Suzuki (Japanese) as a Chinese girl?!?; Juanita Hall (!!!!) as a Chinese mom!)... and the music is anything other than authentic Broadway. But ain't that great? Flower Drum is exhuberant, fun and actually a nice move away from some of the more serious stuff R&H were stuffing into their shows around that time. It's a comedy... (what a concept for a musical!)... and a good one, too. And second-tier Rogers & Hammerstein offers a lot more musically than most shows produced in the last decade. So enjoy!

Wow! Pat Suzuki. What a voice.

"I enjoy being a girl". Great Fun!--this performance underscores what a great talent she is.
