Floating Action

Floating Action is North Carolina musician/producer Seth Kauffman (not to be confused with pianist Seth Kaufman — one “f”). After recording under his own name on both HighTone and Park the Van Records, Kauffman adopted the pseudonym Floating Action. Expanding on his “Southern fried Beck”-isms, Floating Action operates in an incongruous but fluid pastiche of styles, with impressive results. The lulling guitar and snare drums of  “To Connect” alongside the languid, faintly tropical “Marie Claire” make for two slices of summery indie-pop heaven, while Kauffman’s dry, rocker-boy vocals trying to make whoopee with the sensual, 70’s soul rhythms of “Don’t Stop Loving Me Now” is charmingly off-kilter. That same, almost preppy-sounding voice weaves skillfully in and out of the old time ska-flavored “Dying Punch,” and Kauffman injects more honey (and a backup vocalist) on the sensual, soulful “Could You Save Me.” Every note, every instrument (including guitar, drums, sitar and keyboards) is played by Kauffman, who is also responsible for all artwork/web site components for Floating Action.
