The sophomore album from 4AD label supergroup This Mortal Coil is a collection of shoegaze folk and dramatic dream pop that feels like a movie soundtrack. Half of the album is instrumental, allowing the producers to flex their mastery of swirly, psychedelic ambience and neo-gothic drama. Surprising vocal features seamlessly weave into the tapestry, including a spunky take on Talking Heads' "Drugs" from club diva Alison Limerick, and Dominic Appleton's sparse, haunting reading of "The Jeweller," penned by ‘60s folk surrealists Pearls Before Swine.
