10 Songs, 51 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

In 1987, George Michael emerged from chart phenomenons Wham! to make an era-defining R&B album. Written and composed entirely by Michael, Faith encompasses a full range of moods and themes, from the shimmering gospel-soul of “Father Figure” to the sticky funk of “I Want Your Sex.” At a compact nine songs, the album avoids any filler, but its crown jewel remains the title track: a frisky, updated Bo Diddley riff that will always sound completely thrilling.

A masterpiece

A rare masterpiece wherein each song is virtually flawless. Shiny, soulful, with hooks galore. As big as "I Want Your Sex" was over that summer, I doubt anyone expected the quality level of the album that followed later in the year. In fact, "Sex" winds up being one of the weaker cuts on the album, and that's saying something. I always wondered why Faith was so good, and now that George has had to leave this world early, I'm guessing it was so he could leave behind one perfect album in the wake of a phenomenal career. This is not to be missed.

Grammy Album of the Year

This album is a great pop record with zero filler. Smooth from start to finish and easily one of the best albums from the 80's.
