Devastating floods in early 2022 delayed the recording of Matt Corby’s third album, complete with a neighbor’s dramatic rescue of his pregnant partner and young son while Corby helped save their home and feed stranded locals. As if that wasn’t enough cause for reflection, the gestation process for Everything’s Fine also spanned COVID lockdowns, which saw the New South Wales singer-songwriter expand into producing and releasing records for other acts. That holistic approach seems to inform this record, which curates a confidently textured soundworld around hard-earned themes of hope and resilience. Witness the buttery folk soul of opener “Problems,” the winking yacht-rock moves on the hopeful “Carry On,” and the burnished funk horns of “Lover,” a warm meditation on marital and familial devotion. Corby naturally taps some surprising stylistic cues, including the conscious hip-hop edge to “Reruns.” But whatever the backdrop, he just sounds happy to be celebrating the rewards of homelife—and a merciful pause in flood- and pandemic-level disasters.
