Alex Turner and Miles Kane perhaps dreamed up the name of their band’s second album as a playful nod to the very specific, very stylish sound they executed so vibrantly on 2008’s The Age of the Understatement. The cinematic strings, mariachi brass, and spirit of Scott Walker remain, but as swaggering single "Bad Habits" (unsubtly) hinted, the pair are working with a broader and bolder color palette. Unshackled, they delve into delicious ‘60s psychedelica (the title track), Nashville heartache (“Sweet Dreams, TN,” “The Dream Synopsis”) and elegant, wicked baroque pop (“Dracula Teeth,” “Patttern”). See you for round three in 2024.
