10 Songs, 35 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

At 22, indie-pop auteur Melina Duterte, a.k.a. Jay Som, sounds like she’s been at it for decades. Her second album, Everybody Works, sticks close to the early ‘90s underground playbook—big hooks, dreamy textures—without ever sounding stale, breathing new life into Yo La Tengo–style fuzz pop (“1 Billion Dogs”) and My Bloody Valentine lullabies (“(BedHead)”). The secret turns out to be Duterte’s songs, which are by turns passionate but resigned, forthright but vulnerable, beautiful but distinctly bittersweet.

One of the year’s best albums

I heard fragments of this album on NPR and found it intriguing enough to make a purchase. It’s a pretty great mix of grunge-era rock, modern pop, and ballads about just trying to do your best while figuring out who you are in life. I can’t say enough great things about this record.

Feels so good, like 1987

Discovered this on NPR's "First Listen." Been streaming the album trying to catch what past music-listening life of mine this hearkens to, and it's mid-late '80s underground especially Throwing Muses. Thank you, Melina Duterte aka Jay Som.

Loving This

Kind of an early Ivy vibe, but can rock more. When it comes down to it a great song is a great song. And with these super tasty arrangements and some hip experimental sounds, this is just a great all around record. What a cool chic! Great live band too with her if you youtube it.
