10 Songs, 37 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Los Ángeles Azules have endlessly reinvented themselves since they first emerged from a long apprenticeship in Mexico's clubs to become international stars in the '90s. But they've also continually returned to cumbia's signature rhythms. Esto Sí Es Cumbia is more a celebration of that rich tradition, though it does sneak in plenty of subtle-but-thrilling surprises, like the crashing hip-hop break that ups the funk on "Sexo, Pudor y Lágrimas." The real twists come from the guest vocalists assembled to give these strutting and slinky grooves their personality, whether it's pop duo Ha-Ash adding both sweetness and seduction to "Perdón, Perdón" or legendary diva Gloria Trevi channeling all of her soul-scalding fierceness on "Dr. Psiquiatra."
