RuPaul’s stint as flag-waver on RuPaul’s Drag Race has coincided with her diving even deeper into cutting-edge club music, as this collection of her recent bops shows. In addition to highlighting collaborations with New Orleans Queen of Bounce Big Freedia (the booty-shaker “Peanut Butter”) and drag legend Lady Bunny (the electro-squiggle come-on “Lick It Lollipop”), Essential, Vol. 2 drops some new tunes: “Crying On the Dance Floor” reworks Ru’s pulsing 2009 track “Main Event” into a defiant house anthem about working out emotions in the club, while “All Over Me” combines deep beats and regret-tinged lyrics.
