The crux of Encores comprises 21st-century solo acoustic performances of Jimmy Buffett's 20th-century favorites, with very little (if any) accompaniment. In fact, 12 of the 22 songs are just Jimmy and his guitar. The other ten tunes feature spare backing by the random special guest or a few members of his band. And as the album’s title reveals, every song was recorded during the encore segment of different shows in the U.S. (as well as Paris) during his 2008/2009 tour. Ask any Parrot Head what the best part of a Jimmy Buffet concert is and they’ll tell you how he always saves the best for last — he himself likens his intimate encores to the dessert of a great meal. “Come Monday” opens with four elements; congas, steel drums and Jimmy’s guitar and voice. But it’s “Tin Cup Chalice” where you first get to hear just Jimmy and his six-string, revealing the true essence of the man and his music. Other notable performances include a breezy rendition of “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans” with Allen Toussaint on piano as well as a festive cover of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers.”
